Koenen to play for Arkansas

Text Size: AaAaAaAaAa

St. Charles North tennis standout Annemijn Koenen will play her college tennis at Arkansas, Koenen told the Chronicle on Tuesday.

“I had never thought of Arkansas because it’s kind of a random place,” Koenen said. “I had never lived there; I think I played in a tournament there once. ... But they called me, and I decided to look more into the school, and I loved it, and the campus is absolutely beautiful.”

Koenen has enjoyed success in the IHSA State Tournament as both a singles and doubles player for North, finishing sixth in the state in doubles as a senior with her younger sister, Liselot. North coach Tim Matacio called Koenen “a performer” who “enjoys the big moment,” saying Koenen won’t shy from the challenges of high-level, Division I tennis.

“Annemijn is an extremly gifted player,” Matacio said. “She’s probably one of the most gifted players I’ve ever had a chance to work with, so in terms of her tennis skills, technique, drive, intelligence, everything that it takes to be a great tennis player, she’s very gifted.”
