Restaurants charged in liquor sting

BATAVIA – Chuck E. Cheese and El Taco Grande have been charged with selling alcohol to minors as part of a undercover sting staged by Batavia Police and the Illinois Liquor Control Commission earlier this month.

The sting took place on March 5. The Illinois Liquor Control Commission on Tuesday announced that Chuck E. Cheese, 511 N. Randall Road, Batavia, and El Taco Grande, 1890 Mill St., Batavia, were charged as part of the sting.

Twelve establishments in Batavia were checked as part of the sting.

El Taco Grande has a second location on River Street in Batavia that was not charged in the sting.

Corporate officials with Chuck E. Cheese said they were not aware of the incident and could not comment. A manager at the El Taco Grande on Mill Street was not available for comment.

The penalties for selling alcohol to minors can include fines and/or liquor license suspension or revocation.

The Illinois Liquor Control Commission uses high school and college students as undercover agents to randomly check liquor stores, restaurants and bars to make sure they are not selling alcohol to minors under the age of 21.

"It is a serious thing to be serving liquor to kids," said Susan Hofer, spokesperson for the Illinois Liquor Control Commission. "It is a privilege to have a liquor license."
