Woodstock inspires jazz fest for cancer research

ELBURN – Connecting to the 40th anniversary of Woodstock on Saturday, an Elburn couple is hosting a jazz festival to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

With the theme, peace, love, and fundraising, Jam For a Cure is from 3 p.m. to midnight at Brad and Debbi Polivka’s Groovy Farm, 39W462 Seavey Road, Batavia. A catered Hawaiian dinner will be served from 6 to 8 p.m. in a family friendly atmosphere, with live jazz music Debbi Polivka said.

The food will be pulled pork, marinated chicken with chutney, tropical fruit salad and Hawaiian cole slaw and beer. Other than listening to jazz, activities include the Most Authentic Hippie contest, tie-dyed T-shirts and games.

Now in their 10th year, Polivka’s group of friends have raised more than $200,000 to find a cure and to support those affected by blood cancers.

“We started as a sailing crew, sailing competitively on Lake Michigan,” Polivka said. “Ironically, each of us was touched by the disease. My father passed away from it, another member’s mother passed away. We tried to put our heads together about how to make it fun and up the amount of money we could raise. We became really passionate about it.”

Tickets are $40 for adults and $20 for ages 20 and younger. Families are welcome to bring children under 10 for free.

Local bands will perform, including Jykes, Disbarred, Flavor, The Tourists, and Random Acts of Jazz.

Checks payable to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society can be sent to Jam For A Cure, 737 Independence Ave, Elburn, IL 60119 or call the Polivkas at 630-365-1491.

She said they will have a limited amount of tickets at the door. Those planning to attend should call by today to accommodate the caterer.
