North stars in football rankings
GPS charts and The Chronicle's Week 1 football rankings share something in common: Both show North at the top.
St. Charles North's impressive season-opening win against Batavia earned it the top spot in our first rankings of the season, while Aurora Central Catholic's prolonged slide put the Chargers on the other end.
Here are the rankings in full. Bring on the debates.
10. Aurora Central Catholic (0-1): The Chargers played through the final quarter of a 44-0 loss to Genoa-Kingston with a running clock and are winless since the 2007 season.
9. Burlington Central (0-1): A trip to the Kaneland 11-yard line during a 35-0 loss showed the Rockets can move the ball, but 114 yards of total offense showed consistency could be a problem.
8. Batavia (0-1): B-Towners keep pointing to the returning talent that shouldn't make theirs a swiss cheese defense, but how must anyone associated with the program's last three games feel right now?
7. Marmion (0-1): Doctors evaluated running back Matt Pircon's shoulder Monday morning, leaving Cadets fans in limbo. Marmion scarcely needs any more members on its injured list.
6. Aurora Christian (1-0): Sophomore quarterback Grayson Roberts earned comparisons to his older brother after Friday's air show against DuSable. Stay tuned for the SCC season to see if they're warranted.
5. St. Charles East (0-1): Let's be frank: if Geneva's Boenzi hadn't snuffed out the Saints' last-ditch throwback pass Friday, there could have been overtime at Norris Stadium.
4. St. Francis (1-0): How's this for an omen? Spartan Kevin Fassnacht returned the first kickoff of the season 92 yards for a score against Yorkville, matching a feat that sparked St. Francis' 2008 title run.
3. Geneva (1-0): Vikings feature new looks at almost every position compared to a year ago, though the jelling offensive line stayed especially tough for the two-headed running game.
2. Kaneland (1-0): Get used to more 300-yard days from junior quarterback Joe Camiliere. His performance against Burlington Central left the Knights faithful giddy about things to come.
1. St. Charles North (1-0): Jeff Stolzenburg's Kevin Fassnacht impression to start the second half against Batavia ignited North's runaway. Speaking of returns, how explosive will this team be when Jordan Huxtable gets back?
