Still looking up (and down)
Some things never change, and so far the top and bottom slots in The Chronicle's weekly football rankings fit that description.
St. Charles North remained on top after Week 2 on the strength of another win of 30-plus points. Aurora Central Catholic threatened to leave the cellar, but alas is still there.
Here are the rankings in full. Once again, bring on the debates.
10. Aurora Central Catholic (0-2): The Chargers led Marengo on the road, 7-6, at halftime, but could not hold on against the upstart Indians, whose murky recent history mirrors ACC's.
9. Burlington Central (0-2): ACC didn't see the running clock in its loss – unlike the Rockets – but BC also has faced a pair of opponents from a stronger conference, the Western Sun.
8. St. Charles East (0-2): Look for the Saints to march up this list just as swiftly as they fell down. A favorable early conference schedule could put them on a roll entering a Week 7 date at Bartlett.
7. Marmion (1-1): Clearly ailing without senior running back Matt Pircon, the Cadets gained plenty of control on the other side of the ball in a home-opening win against Mundelein.
6. Batavia (1-1): Run first, Noel. Batavia's backs tallied three touchdowns as the 'O' turned it on against West Chicago, while quarterback Noel Gaspari also passed for a score.
5. Aurora Christian (1-1): Sheldon Magee is emerging as a top dual threat. He caught three touchdowns in an overtime loss to Mendota and ran efficiently, but his passing on gadget plays needs work.
4. St. Francis (2-0): Special teams continue to shine for the Spartans, who have returned the opening kickoff for touchdowns in two straight weeks. This time, Mark Schmitt did the trick against DeKalb.
3. Kaneland (1-1): Wasn't long ago they were pinning the "risk-reward" label on Rich Harvest Farms. Ditto for the Knights' spread offense in nearby Maple Park. Turnovers sure were costly against Huntley.
2. Geneva (2-0): Can you hear them now? Vikings kept storming out of the gate against Morgan Park as a new PA system dedicated to late lineman John McNeil trumpeted the action.
1. St. Charles North (2-0): Jeff Stolzenburg knows a little something about the right place and right time. Again, he scored a TD to spur a North Stars runaway, this one a juggling act against McHenry.
