Injury bug bites North Stars, 'Dogs

The St. Charles North and Batavia football teams will be missing key components of squads that hope to contend for conference titles when Week 3 kicks off Friday night.

North Stars junior wide receiver Josh Mikes had an MRI on his back this week and is awaiting the results. Meantime, senior running back and co-captain Jordan Huxtable (ankle) remains a gametime decision for North's Upstate Eight Conference opener at East Aurora. Both players have missed the first two games as North has raced to the first 2-0 start in school history.

"With Jordan, we really take it day by day," North Stars coach Mark Gould said. "He's been running and says it's feeling beter every day. But it's one of those things with an ankle that if you rush it too quick, it just takes a little twist and you hurt it again."

In Batavia, senior Pete Koczmara – a running back new to the offensive scene – is out indefinitely. A converted linebacker, Koczmara was pulled down by his collar with his leg planted on a carry late in the first half of the Bulldogs' Week 2 win at West Chicago and will undergo an MRI Monday.

Koczmara said he suspects a swollen right MCL and hopes there is no ACL damage.

"Someone grabbed me and something snapped," Koczmara said. "I was pretty angry because this is my first time playing running back and I got hurt."

Batavia (1-1) hosts Glenbard South to begin the final season of Western Sun Conference play.
