Norsemen grab top football spot from North
The Chronicle's football rankings have stayed about the same at the top and bottom to this point, but Week 4 brings a change of the guard at Nos. 10 and 1.
Aurora Central Catholic climbed out of the cellar with its first victory in 14 tries while Geneva supplanted St. Charles North at the top spot with its 22nd straight regular season win.
What would the score be if those programs played one another? Let that debate and any on the rankings begin:
10. Burlington Central (1-3): What have you won for me lately? Rockets sink to bottom spot in rankings after late rally against Oregon fizzles.
9. Aurora Central Catholic (1-3): Rolling up a linescore that sounds like a lottery ticket – 14, 21, 20, 7 and 62 – Chargers escape the basement with a blowout.
8. Batavia (1-3): If things keep going the way they are, the Bulldogs' streak of successive playoff appearances – since 2003 and counting – will be deep-sixed.
7. St. Charles East (2-2): Saints weather Storm's late charge to climb back to .500. A favorable schedule has them thinking winning streak and even playoffs.
6. Aurora Christian (3-1): Do it all, John Magee: transfer running back runs over Wheaton Academy, helping hand the Wildcats their first loss.
5. St. Francis (3-1): Tony Vargyas ran, caught and intercepted his way into a starring role against Montini. Taking the brunt of a running-into-the-kicker penalty helped, too.
4. Marmion (3-1): The Cadets watched for falling chunks of sky after Week 1, but Marmion's turnaround amid a string of shaky health means things are just plain looking up. Right?
3. Kaneland (3-1): Knights keep high-powered Sycamore attack grounded and return home looking to stop struggling Batavia cold.
2. St. Charles North (3-1): North sees another of the UEC's offensive stars in Larkin running back Jalen Williams this week. The team hopes he's no Kenny Clay of Waubonsie Valley.
1. Geneva (4-0): New chart-toppers handle Trace Wanless and Glenbard South down the stretch while suspended defensive tackle Frank Boenzi looks on.
