Saints ascend near top of football rankings
St. Charles East rose to its highest spot yet in our football rankings, using a come-from-behind overtime win at Waubonsie Valley to supplant Kaneland at No. 3.
Geneva, which squeaked by the Saints in Week 1, remains at the top.
Speaking of rankings, will East find itself hanging with Geneva and St. Charles North in this week's Associated Press Class 7A poll?
As usual, let the debates begin:
10. Aurora Central Catholic (1-5): Chargers stand up to Marmion for a time, giving coach Mike Curry optimism for the home stretch, which includes two games against teams at .500 or below.
9. Burlington Central (2-4): Sound familiar? BC drops Battle of the Rockets to Richmond-Burton after falling behind early.
8. Batavia (1-5): Emerging sophomore runner Danny Seiton says something that hasn't been heard in B-Town since 2002: "There are no playoff hopes, but we're still trying to finish 3-0."
7. Aurora Christian (4-2): John Magee's three touchdowns keep Eagles in elite company atop the SCC Gold. A date Friday at St. Edward should decide this half of the league.
6. St. Francis (5-1): At least the Spartans are consistent in their blowouts. St. Francis led Hales Franciscan, 33-0, at the end of one quarter Friday and was ahead by the final 54-0 margin at intermission.
5. Kaneland (4-2): Dust off that Vikings voodoo doll if you want an outright WSC title. Knights' sloppy home loss to Glenbard South means Kaneland must hope league-leading Geneva stumbles separately from the teams' Week 8 meeting
4. Marmion (5-1): Cadets weather storm to blank Aurora Central Catholic, 21-0, while solidifying a special teams unit that looks like more of a strength every week.
3. St. Charles East (4-2): Saints' four-game winning streak includes healthy wins against struggling foes (Streamwood, East Aurora) as well as two "statement games" (South Elgin, Waubonsie Valley).
2. St. Charles North (5-1): Jeff in a jiffy. Stolzenburg once again returns the second-half kickoff for a score to spark a North Stars' runaway, this time finding paydirt at Streamwood.
1. Geneva (6-0): Running clock against DeKalb allows Vikes to strut second-string stuff. Dylan Nobregas takes the cue – not to mention a 64-yard touchdown run – on his first carry of the year.
