COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A filing in U.S. District Court shows Ohio will switch to a one-drug approach to lethal injection executions, with a muscle injection available as a back up.
The state's decision to move away from its three-drug method comes two months after a death row inmate walked away from an unsuccessful execution in September and subsequent executions were put on hold. The switch was revealed in filing Friday.
The state has been looking for alternatives to the three-drug cocktail since a federal judge said it couldn't go forward with a second planned execution attempt of Romell Broom.
In the first attempt, Broom was unable to be executed Sept. 15 because officials couldn't find a suitable vein for the lethal injection.
