Preps 24/7: Preseason softball rankings
Wisely, the teams who were set to throw their first pitches of the season today moved their games up to Friday. With the softball season about to get under way in earnest – white stuff notwithstanding – here's a look at the first rankings of the spring:
10. Aurora Central Catholic: For the first few weeks, anyway, the talk figures to be about the bizarre ouster of coach Claude Ainsworth last summer. Kim Troutman takes over at ACC.
9. St. Francis: The Spartans have been over .500 more often than not since coach Ralph Remus came to Wheaton in 1999.
8. Aurora Christian: it's a family affair for these Eagles, as freshman pitcher/outfielder Sarah Morris joins senior sister Shannah, a shortstop/catcher, and the team's coach, Mike.
7. Kaneland: Kaneland could lay claim to the Vest battery in the Western Sun Conference. Look for pitcher Delani and catcher Rilee to play big roles this spring.
6. Geneva: Defense wins championships, the saying goes, but it's also vital in early-season games. The Vikings need more ot it to buoy an experienced pitching staff.
5. Rosary: Opposing catchers caught Brenda Rocha stealing just one time in 30 attempts last season. Why wouldn't she get the green light?
4. Batavia: Bulldogs have no fear of the unknown, which includes a freshman at second base and top-notch center fielder Katie Luetkens at shortstop.
3. Burlington Central: Though most of the firepower from last season's state tournament team is gone, the up-and-coming Rockets have a model to follow.
2. St. Charles East: Versatile Saints are eager to get moving. "The more athletes you have, the better off you are," coach Kelly Horan says.
1. St. Charles North: With so many players returning from an already talented and experienced bunch, North takes plenty of optimism into the year.
