Former St. Charles cheer coach accused of having sex with student pleads guilty to lesser charge

WAUKEGAN – A former coach at a St. Charles cheerleading academy has been sentenced to probation in connection with charges that he had sex with a student three years ago.

Christopher Frum, 28, now of Nevada, pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated battery in Lake County Circuit Court on Tuesday. He was sentenced to two years probation.

As a condition of that probation, Frum must agree to complete any and all treatments recommended by the state, refrain from the use of alcohol and illegal drugs and have no unsupervised contact with minors.

He may be allowed to complete his probation in Nevada, if Nevada authorities consent, said Lake County State’s Attorney Bodie Haxall.

Prosecutors had charged Frum, formerly of Deer Park, in 2007 with three counts each of criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse. They said Frum had sex three times with a then-16-year-old St. Charles girl between March 1 and May 6, 2007, in his home.

The girl had been one of Frum’s students at Cheer Alliance Inc. in St. Charles, prosecutors said.

Frum resigned his coaching job in May 2007 and was arrested May 21.

Haxall said prosecutors agreed to allow Frum to plead to the lesser charge after the victim, now 20, refused to work with authorities in prosecuting the case.

“She at no point up to and including today has wanted us to pursue this case,” Haxall said. “She believes even this sentence has been too significant.”

Haxall said Frum has completed a sex offender treatment program and has been rated as “highly unlikely” to commit a sex crime in the future.

Haxall further said Frum has willingly offered authorities aid in an ongoing federal investigation. Haxall would not comment on that investigation.
