Geneva Underground Playhouse to present 'Godspell' this month

The Geneva Underground Playhouse will present “Godspell,” the musical based on the Gospel of St. Matthew, on March 25.

Shows will be at 8 p.m. March 25-26, April 1,2, 8 and 9, and at 3 p.m. March 27, April 3 and 10. Tickets cost $20 for adults and $15 for seniors older than 65 and students.

The show features Alex Adams, Harmony Barry, Zach Gibson,Polly Ludena, Charlie Rucker, Brenda Scharlau and Millie Schwartz.

It is directed by Susan Able Barry, who said she has loved the musical since she first time she performed in it when she was 16 years old, according to a recent news release.

"It's always been a favorite of mine," she said in the release. "I love the theme and I love that it's fun."
The musical's score was written by Stephen Schwartz, who also wrote the score the popular musical, "Wicked." He based "Godspell" on the Gospel of Matthew, the first book of the New Testament, and also has some parables from the Book of Luke.

“Godspell” is one of the biggest off-Broadway and Broadwaysuccesses of all time, according to the release.

Tickets are available at the theater’s website – www.guptheatre.org – or by calling 630-677-1725. A credit card is needed for tickets ordered online, and tickets ordered through the box office phone number will be picked up at the theater the night of the performance, and must be paid for with cash or check.

The Geneva Underground Playhouse is a nonprofit community theater at 524 W. State St. in downtown Geneva, IL. It receives support from Stanton Properties and the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission.
