Sound Off: Who is snobbish?
The following is what our readers sounded off about this week:
Rentals aren’t needed
Regarding the “Our Views” portion of the Chronicle’s editorial page over the weekend, business and residential property owners who care for their neighborhood and community were called snobbish. Adding 125 more rentals in the downtown area will further create renter issues, as opposed to selling them as condos. Do you really think most renters take care of their property and their surroundings as if they own them? The last thing the town needs is more rentals. Take a drive through the area, and there are dozens and dozens of rentals available in a 20-block radius of this development, and that’s just the ones that advertise with a sign in the front yard. That same morning, I saw that the Chronicle favored more rentals, I happened to walk by fresh, new gang graffiti on a building in full view of Main Street traffic in downtown St. Charles. Usually, that gang graffiti is closer to Randall Road, where, guess what, all of the rental complexes are located. Change your view.
Rentals a perfect fit
I’m calling in regards to the Sound Off about people calling in about the undesirables for the rentals in downtown St. Charles on First Street. First of all, those rents are going to be so extravagant that the undesirables that everyone is all worried about, they can’t afford to live there. For what they’re going to get for rent there, they can go ahead and get that kind of rent. That area is going to be more toward executives and people like that. I welcome this project. I think it will be a perfect fit for the downtown. I do agree to the one caller, that you have more problems with the bars between downtown St. Charles and Geneva. You’re going to have more problems with them than you are with anything else.
God bless everyone
I just want to say happy new year to everyone. If you’re laid off, I hope you find work. If you’re sick, I hope they find a cure. If you’re having hard times and struggling, I hope you find what you need. God bless everyone.
Striping needed on St. Charles roadways
Needed, with some urgency, is striping on St. Charles roadways. It is difficult enough in dry weather to discern straight roadways, turn lanes and other directives, but it is very bad in stormy weather. The lack of striping invites accidents due to disorientation by drivers. Please give this matter priority in immediate roadway improvements, St. Charles.
Thank you, Chronicle
Enthusiastically, I want to congratulate Kane County Chronicle Editor Kathy Gresey and the entire newspaper staff for doing a great job of delivering a quality paper, packed with local news stories that affect us in our schools and communities. I wish you all continued success in the coming new year.
Obama and closed dealerships
For all of the Obama supporters, it is time that you start looking at what Obama has done to the local economy. Forget the trillions of dollars of debt that he has saddled the future generations to repay, or the stimulus package that never worked, or Obamacare that will cost three to four times more than originally projected, or the energy policy of blocking the U.S. from becoming energy independent and also costing hundreds of thousands of union jobs. But look locally.
How many new car dealers have closed because Obama pressured General Motors and Chrysler to reduce dealerships, thereby reducing competition, before they would receive any taxpayer bailout money. Not only have the workers lost their jobs, but states and local governments have lost their sales and property-tax revenue from the closed automobile dealers. Drive anywhere in the Fox Valley and notice the number of former new car dealer lots that are for sale because of Obama. Whether these dealers were going to be viable in the future was not up to Obama. Look at Obama’s control of General Motors, which produces electric cars that no one wants without a high tax incentive. It is not the millionaires or billionaires that have caused the economic downturn. Look no further than 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
No more lambasting
All I want to say is, when we have people running to be the next president, I would like to not hear them lambasting the past presidents or the present president. We don’t hear what they want to do, what their views are for the future. All they do is say, this one did this, Bush did that, Obama did that. We don’t hear their views on anything else, and I would not give my vote to anyone who lambastes and cannot say what they would like to do for our country.
Stand up and say no
I like to think of myself as a law-abiding citizen. I don’t intentionally break any laws, and I’m sure with all the laws that we have that every one of us has broken a law at one time or another. But this drain-clog business of registering so that you can buy something like Drano because two people in Chicago violated the law and caused severe burns on other people doesn’t make it right to punish everyone else. Illinois is losing people right and left. There was an article late last year that said Illinois is losing population, well, you’re going to lose a lot more. I hope that the store owners will rebel against this law. What can the government do if the store owners, all together, refused to violate the rights to citizens’ rights to privacy? Why aren’t we punishing illegal immigrants, instead of giving them a pass? Why are we taking away the rights of law-abiding citizens because you are failing to punish the people who did the deeds in the first place. This isn’t right. We’re giving lawbreakers breaks, and we’re taking away all the rights to privacy from law-abiding citizens and giving them to people who are going to break the law no matter what. I will not put my name on a registry. I will go out of state and buy what I need because I am sick and tired of having my privacy violated and my rights violated by people who think they know what’s better for us and how to better protect our family. This law is not going to work, and I think we ought to rebel against it, and we all should start thumbing our nose at the government. I really believe that it’s past time for the citizens to stand up and say ... no, no more, we won’t go there.
Romney isn’t with it
I would just like to express my opinion on something I heard Romney say this morning. He’s running for president, and he’s supposed to be a religious person. But when he’s talking about, as all of the Republicans do about the president, he makes remarks like, he might be a nice guy, but he’s not with it. Well, I don’t think he’s with it, religiously, if he’s criticizing a nice person like Obama. The reason he thinks the president is not with it is because the Congress and the Senate [were] not with it and would not cooperate with him.
