Geneva girls basketball braces for road test

Geneva girls basketball players are ready to tangle on Friday night.

Weather permitting, of course.

The 18-3 Vikings (River) are set to visit 15-2 Waubonsie Valley (Valley) at 7:15 p.m. in a meeting of Upstate Eight Conference Division leaders.

"Friday night is going to be a huge test for us, especially with Ashley [Santos] out," Vikings junior forward Kelly Gordon said. "I think everyone is going to have to step and push a little harder every game. It's going to be a big game for us, especially as a team."

Santos, a senior combo and Marquette recruit, suffered a season-ending ACL tear during Saturday's McDonald's Shootout victory against previously-unbeaten Lincoln-Way East at Willowbrook.

Geneva scored home victories against West Chicago and St. Charles East earlier this week.

"These are big challenges for us," Vikings coach Sarah Meadows said, "so we have to come out ready to play."

With the UEC adding a crossover playoff against the team that finishes in the other division's corresponding spot, another Vikings-Warriors clash could be on tap in less than a month. The girls crossover playoff games are set for Feb. 9, with the boys games to be played two weeks later.
