Why Gannon was selected: Gannon earned four medals at the IHSA boys swimming and diving state meet at Evanston, including a sixth-place individual finish in the 500-yard freestyle.

St. Charles North junior Kyle Gannon captured four medals at the IHSA boys state swimming and diving finals on Saturday at Evanston. He placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle and 11th in the 200 free while contributing to the 200 freestyle relay (10th) and 400 freestyle relay (eighth). Gannon, the St. Charles Bank & Trust Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week, said he planned to take only a day or two off before he returned to the pool for club training. Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley caught up with Gannon during that interim. The following is an edited transcript:

I know you guys were hoping for a stronger team finish [than 13th], but what do you take away from your individual swims?
The focus is still on the team, to be honest. Hopefully we get some top-six relays, some top-six individual swims and have better luck next year.

Your sister swam at North and there have been lots of other siblings to come through North. How close is everyone?
Pretty much everybody’s had coach (Rob) Rooney, so it’s a pretty tight-knit family.

Any history with Danny Thomson (of Hinsdale Central, a three-time state champ in the 500 free)?
I finished second to him at Neuqua (Valley) earlier this year. He’s a nice guy. He will always look up, shake your hand and congratulate you. He swam great ... and not so much from me in the 500.
