MAPLE PARK – Brittany Olson wanted to prove something Tuesday.
The Kaneland sophomore forward was out to show the Knights not only belonged on the same field as the DeKalb girls soccer team, but that they could beat the Barbs.
With eight minutes gone in the second half, Olson found her chance.
She took a long cross from freshman forward Madi Jurcenko, just beat a sliding Maddie Frye to the ball and poked it into the back of the net. It was the lone goal of the match as Kaneland defeated DeKalb, 1-0.
"As soon as Madi crossed it, I was like, 'I have to get this goal.' We have to convert on every option we get," Olson said, showing off a bruise on her knee from the collision. "I saw the goalie slide-tackle at me. I just went straight into her."
Kaneland (5-3-1, 1-1-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference) knocked DeKalb (6-2-1, 4-1 NI Big 12) from the ranks of the unbeaten in conference play.
Kaneland assistant coach Kevin Bickley, filling in while head coach Scott Parillo attended a funeral, said the Knights had to play physical with DeKalb in order to take the Barbs out of their style of play.
DeKalb had possession of the ball for most of the game, but only had a few quality chances.
"We had to match that physicalness, not dirty or anything, but good physical play," Bickley said. "They always bring a good game, and in the past, I think we might have stepped back a little bit."
