Prep roundup: Marmion, St. Charles North bass fishing chasing leader

CARLYLE – The St. Charles North and Marmion bass fishing teams found themselves near the back of a crowded field after the state tournament opened Friday at downstate Carlyle Lake.

North (6 9⁄16 pounds) and Marmion (5 12⁄16) will be chasing leader Fenwick (16 1⁄16) when the tournament concludes today with a final session.

Anglers navigated a pair of weather delays while storms moved through the area, but additional time was not added.

Marmion’s John Thielen caught three of the team’s five fish in the final 45 minutes of competition.

“We finally found a good spot at the end of the day,” Cadets coach Joe Large said. “It’s better than nothing, but unfortunately, there were some teams catching some big fish today. We’re not in a great position, but we know that it’s not impossible, either.”

St. Charles East also is part of the state field, but did not catch any keepers.

Willowbrook Sectional:
At Villa Park, Geneva (11.5 points) finished second to champion Willowbrook (14.5) and produced a pair of qualifiers to next weekend’s state meet at Eastern Illinois. Nora Burkhardt and Nicole Schneider won the doubles title, while Ann Green was third in singles.

St. Charles East’s Cassie Bossert, the sectional singles champion, also is state-bound.

At the Glenbard East Sectional in Lombard, St. Charles North was unable to produce a state qualifer.

St. Charles East 6, Streamwood 4 (11 inn.):
At St. Charles, Sean Dunne scored on a double steal of second and home to provide the winning run for East (15-7, 13-3 UEC River). Johnny Hondlik got the win in relief of Kyle Manske, allowing three runs – two earned – in six innings.

Aurora Central Catholic 9, Wheaton Academy 3:
At Aurora, Bekah Heubner and Jess Bosse both doubled for Wheaton Academy (9-14, 5-9 SCC Gold).

York 3, St. Charles North 0:
At St. Charles, North (12-4-2) suffered its second shutout loss in a week. Goalkeeper Carly Dietrich had eight saves.

Burlington Central 1, Richmond-Burton 1 (2 OT): At Richmond, Ellen Jayne scored on a feed from Courtney Andrew midway through the first half for Central (13-6-2, 7-1-1 BNC East) in a match that featured a pair of five-minute overtime periods.
