Our View: Attitude key
to new year

Students and teachers from several area school districts are starting to head back to class.

There’s always a mixed reaction about the first day of school, even within the same person.

Often it’s a mix of anxiety, excitement or both about new teachers, new classmates and a sense of melancholy about the end of summer

Each school year brings a fresh start. Maybe you had a terrific one last year. Grades were fantastic, you got along well with teachers and are looking forward to seeing your classmates again and meeting some new faces.

With that attitude, you’re ahead of the game. But how about trying to top those efforts this year? Is there a new sport or activity that you’ve wanted to try? Books you’ve wanted to read? Find out what else you’re capable of accomplishing.

• “I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it,” Pablo Picasso said.

If there’s some sense of dread about this year, maybe things didn’t go as well as you’d hoped last year. This is your chance to start again with a clean slate. But attitude is the most important thing this time of year. So, if it needs adjustment, there’s no time like the present.

• “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude,” Thomas Jefferson said.

No one starts a school year with straight A’s nor do they start with a failing grade. It’s a blank slate, and you get to make some new impressions.

• “The past is a ghost, the future a dream, and all we ever have is now,” Bill Cosby remarked.

Whatever kind of year you plan to have is something you can decide right now. Why not have a great one?
