Here’s hoping the 2012 season brings better things for football in St. Charles.
Look, St. Charles East and North athletics haven’t exactly been in the tubes the past couple years. Both schools have seen mucho success in most sports.
Yet with no playoffs in football at either school since 2009, something’s been missing. A big something, in Coach Sly’s world.
Sly would have never thought both St. Charles schools would miss the playoffs back-to-back years, as consistent as the Saints and North Stars have been for most of the past decade.
Let’s just hope the mini-rut for each program comes to an end, as Warden Norton in Shawshank Redemption would say, “Not tomorrow, not after breakfast ... Now!”
Especially with this being coach Gould’s last season at North, it would be tremendous to see the North Stars have a bounce-back year. A third straight losing season would hardly be a fitting way for Gould to go considering the success the North Stars have had under his leadership.
Sly thinks both East and North have a fighting chance to turn things around this year, but it might be tough for both of them to do it at the same time.
You figure Batavia and Geneva are safe bets to make the playoffs, per the usual, which makes it tricky for two more teams in the River to qualify unless they really clean up in the nonconference.
Sly gives the Saints a slightly better chance than the North Stars to right the ship based on having a few more impact players, but the bottom line is both teams have a lot to prove.
Here’s hoping they’re up to the task.
