Prep Roundup: St. Charles North girls tennis downs S. Elgin

ST. CHARLES – A sweep of all four doubles matches Thursday keyed the St. Charles North girls tennis team’s 5-2 victory against South Elgin.

“Our doubles are kind of doing what we hoped they’d do,” North Stars coach Eve Tubman said. “Nobody really struggled out there.”

North’s No. 1 pairing of Ashley Randazzo and Faith Oehlerking yielded just two games in its match, while no other team allowed more than five in straight-set victories.

Like the rest of their teammates, the North Stars’ No. 3 team of Emma Spellman and Abby Kloverdanz was able to work on getting to the net and honing other points stressed at recent practices.

“We were trying to get them to try some new things while they had the chance to do that and not feel so stressed,” Tubman said.

Naperville North 7, Geneva 1: At Geneva, Kirby Einck cruised, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to notch the lone victory for 1-1 Geneva.

Rosary 7, Plainfield Central 0: At Aurora, Rosary improved to 1-1 behind strong showings from its top two doubles tandems. The pairings of Megan Conlin and Andrea Goyao and Cara Custer and Haley VanDyke both won, 6-1, 6-0.

St. Charles North 2, Bartlett 0 (25-6, 25-17):
At St. Charles, Taylor Krage (six kills) and Irena Grauzinis (five) sparked a balanced attack for 2-0 North. Sydney Wohlert served nine straight points, including three aces, in a Game 1 run.

Newark 2, Aurora Christian 0 (25-16, 25-9): At Newark, Aurora Christian dropped the nonconference contest.

Oswego 4, Geneva 2:
At Oswego, Matt Butz scored twice on feeds from Josh Poythress, but Geneva fell to 0-2.

Marmion 4, Sycamore 2: At Aurora, Marmion (2-0) received goals from Eddie Graham, Trevor Jones, Gavin Sanchez and Flynn Collins.

Marengo 174, Kaneland 179:
At Marengo Ridge Golf Course, Kaneland lost despite Matt Yonkovich’s medalist round of 41. The Knights’ Luke Kreiter and Connor Williams both shot 45.

Naperville North 171, St. Charles East 173:
At Springbrook Golf Course in Naperville, East struggled with its short game in a narrow defeat. Paige Jordan (41) and Jordan Thomas (42) paced the Saints.

Waubonsie Valley 169, St. Charles North 180: At Pottawatomie Golf Course in St. Charles, Ariana Furrie (42) and Jessica Grill (43) kept North close in the UEC crossover dual.
