'Dogs still have it

The Batavia football team didn't exactly stick its toe into the pool to start the 2012 season.

This was more of a full-blown cannonball splash, announcing their presence as a conference and indeed state contender with a rousing, 42-41 win at DVC powerhouse Glenbard North.

On a night when Tri-Cities football pride needed some salvaging, Batavia delivered in a big way.

What a clutch, exciting performance by the Bulldogs.

Batavia showed off a wide array of playmakers on 'O,' and you have to think the defense will make plenty of strides as the year goes along, not to mention look better against less gifted offenses. Let's face it, talent-wise, this was the toughest test Batavia will have til the playoffs.

That's not to say the Dogs are any kind of lock to run the table this year, but beating Glenbard North is one heckuva hump to get over if that's any kind of goal.

As for Batavia's good buddies to the north, Geneva ... one week is way too early to give up the ship, but the Vikings apparently are going to deal with growing pains that are above and beyond the norm. Sure, they probably won't have group butterfingers like that again this season, but there are other concerns on both sides of the ball and special teams that might not have an easy fix.

With Wheaton North and Batavia coming next, the Vikings are going to have to show a lot of resilience to make a go of it this season.

No wins yet for the STC schools, but East looks like it's going to be a lot better offensively, putting up 33 point on Cary-Grove. Look like BBarry's going to have himself a season. If the Saints can shore up their D a bit, could be an interesting season for the orange and black.

North Stars still need to get some kinks out on offense with moving to the new scheme. Look for North to rev it up some for next week after a frustrating night in Hinsdale

All in all, pretty rough opening night in the Tri-Cities – unless, of course, you live in B-town. What a win for the Dogs!
