Elgin teen dies in crash west of Burlington

An Elgin teenager died early Sunday morning when the car he was riding in went off the road and struck a tree, according to a news release issued by the Kane County Sheriff's Department. The crash took place at about 12:50 a.m. on Plank Road, west of Engel Road, west of Burlington.

Lawrence Echols, 17, of Elgin was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a back-seat passenger and one of four people in the car. The other back-seat passenger, Shadontre Smith, 19, of South Elgin, was flown by helicopter to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.

According to the news release, the initial investigation showed that a 2007 Lincoln MKZ was traveling west at what appeared to be a high rate of speed. The vehicle crossed the center line and eventually left the roadway on the south side of Plank Road. The vehicle rolled several times and hit a tree.

The driver and front-seat passenger fled the crash on foot. Shannon Hill, 17, of Elgin was the driver, and Jamiah Harrison, 17, of Elgin was the front-seat passenger. The back-seat passengers had to be extricated from the car, the release stated.

Kane County Sheriff’s Deputies, Kane County and DeKalb County Sheriff K-9 units, bloodhound teams from the Midwest K-9 Emergency Response Team, the Air One Emergency Response Coalition Helicopter and the Kane County Office of Emergency Management search and rescue teams conducted a search for the remaining two occupants of the vehicle, according to the release. At approximately 10:30 a.m., deputies were advised that both subjects were at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. They stated that they walked to the hospital after the crash.

No charges have been filed, and the crash remains under investigation by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team, police said. Plank Road between Engel and County Line was closed until approximately 11 a.m. Sunday.
