Letter: ‘We’ve given all you people need to know’

To the Editor:

There are still major issues hanging over the Romney campaign. When is he going to release more tax returns? He has, to date, released one year – 2010 – and an estimate for 2011. Estimates are subject to change.

One of his latest statements on the subject raised more questions. He said he had gone back into his returns and that he had never paid less than 13 percent taxes. Does that include real estate and sales tax? We already know he has a number of multimillion dollar homes. Is the public pleased that he said he paid at least 13 percent last year when most of us pay at least 15 percent and many in his income bracket pay at least 30 percent?

When pressed by an interviewer to prove his claims by releasing more, he said we would just have to take his word for it. He is running for the most powerful position in the world and we are to just take his word for it?

This goes beyond the question of what he really paid; it goes to the question of the credibility of his statements.

Bear in mind this is the fellow who put large sums of money in Swiss bank accounts, often associated with tax evasion, and who also put substantial sums in the Cayman Islands, where there is no income tax or capital gains tax. He also ran up an IRA account to many millions when the maximum contribution annually is typically $6,000.

In a recent interview on the tube, his wife, Ann, said – and I quote – “We’ve given all you people need to know.” Is that condescending or what? She also added it would just give them more ammunition. If there was nothing to hide, how would that give them ammunition?
