To the Editor:
Fox Valley Court Watch began two years ago here in the Fox Valley. Our mission is to provide an impartial assessment of the effectiveness with which domestic violence cases are handled in the court, thereby promoting victim safety and abuser accountability.
Fox Valley Court Watch is a nonprofit agency. We are local volunteers who observe court proceedings and submit reports, which evaluate the court proceedings. We ask a volunteer to commit to half a day per month to observe court proceedings of domestic violence court cases.
The volume of domestic violence court cases being processed through the Kane County court system is huge. Our primary focus is on jury and bench trials.
Domestic violence is a major problem within all counties in Illinois and nationally. With the growth of our organization, we have two major needs. Those needs are additional volunteers for Kane and Kendall counties; and funding – or donations – for Kane and Kendall counties.
Many victims of domestic violence are extremely hesitant to report the incident to police authorities. Domestic violence not only effects the victim but the family of the victim – children often are effected.
Domestic violence can lead to murders or permanent/physical damage to the victims. Volunteer court-watchers are trained and participate in monthly team meetings. The goal of the Fox Valley Court Watch team is to improve services and procedures for domestic violence victims.
