More honors for North Aurora police officers

NORTH AURORA – More honors await three North Aurora police officers who were involved in separate life-saving efforts in 2011.

The officers – Mike Quinn, Randy Voss and Ryan McKiness – will be recognized at Monday’s Village Board meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at North Aurora Village Hall, 25 E. State St.

Each officer will receive the Lifesaving Award from the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.

The officers previously had been honored by the North Aurora Police Department for their efforts.

North Aurora Deputy Chief Scott Buziecki said Monday’s ceremony represents a prestigious award for each officer.

“It’s not that any officer wouldn’t have done the same thing,” said Buziecki, who said the officers were humbled by the recognition. “But it’s just that these three officers were faced with a situation where there were lives at stake.”

Quinn responded to a crash with injuries May 10, 2011, involving a vehicle that was on fire.

He saw someone trapped in the vehicle and attempted to open the driver’s side door, but it was jammed, according to a release issued by the fire department.

The passenger’s side door also was jammed, so Quinn broke the window and pulled the occupant out to safety before working to extinguish the fire.

Voss responded to a report of a tree down on power lines on Spruce Street on July 11, 2011.

He noticed smoke coming from a home, and he saw that the power line had fallen on a fence.

Voss entered and was able to exit the home with an elderly female and a dog. The report noted the woman appeared to not want to leave the home, but it appeared electricity surged through the fence and melted the siding and the gutters of the house.

McKiness responded to an incident Sept. 20, 2011, in which a vehicle had crashed into a tree on Pinehill Court.

The driver was found unconscious and not breathing, and people were performing CPR.

McKiness took over that duty until paramedics arrived, and the patient was treated with a defibrillator.

McKiness was named the 2011 North Aurora Police Officer of the Year by the North Aurora Lion’s Club.
