Weekend Chit-chat with ... Marmion boys golfer Liam Creamer

Marmion boys golfer Liam Creamer knows he has had more than just one difficult hole this season. Still, the nature of his opening 10 at Saturday’s Batavia Invitational at Fox Valley helps one of Marmion’s top golfers narrow his struggles down, for better or worse. A Cadets senior and resident of Geneva’s Mill Creek area, Creamer stays passionate about golf despite its ups and downs, and discussed his season to date with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley for this week’s edition of the Weekend Chit-chat. Creamer also touched on the looming postseason and his college prospects. The following is an edited transcript:

Was there any solidarity aspect to that sextuple bogey 10?

There was another kid from Benet [Academy] who put one drive out on the same hole, so you’re kind of together with that. I just found a way through it. ... Three tee shots out of bounds. The fourth one landed in the fairway.

Other than that, how have you liked your season?

It’s been pretty good. We won an invite, the Geneva Invite, and were happy about that. It’s been fun, Just getting ready for the postseason.

How does knowing and visiting with guys from other schools on the course or in the clubhouse add to this sport?

It’s a good time just hanging out with everybody. You get to see the same people all the time, so it’s enjoyable. It’s fun.

And it’s certainly the same among the Marmion guys.

Definitely, we’re cool with each other. We just have fun with each other. ... We just work together and help each other through it.

When you’re waiting at a hole for someone to shoot or see someone a hole over, is there any guessing game? Any, ‘I bet he’s going to duff this?’

Oh, yeah. Absolutely. Some of the kids, you know the kids that are really good, and then you’re like, ‘Oh, he’s going to play really good.’ Or you see a smaller guy and say, ‘Wow, he’s a kid in high school?’

Swimmers and runners taper. Is there anything different golfers do for the postseason?

I don’t think so. I think it’s just the more you practice, the better you play. Get to bed early and have fun.

How are your college golfing prospects coming together?

I don’t know. It depends. I’d like to play at Butler University, but I don’t know.

What does watching the pros on TV do to help your game, if anything?

I see those guys as inspiration. Thinking you can be one of those guys one day and then eventually working your way up to that.
