Saturday's Prep Roundup: Mixed results for Batavia boys soccer at Morton tournament

MORTON – The Batavia boys soccer team settled for a 1-2 mark at the Morton Invitational, including a pair of tight losses on Saturday.

After opening the tournament with a 2-1, penalty kick win against Edwardsville on Friday, the Bulldogs fell, 3-2, to Moline and 2-1 to Urbana on Saturday.

Still, coach Mark Gianfrancesco detects progress from his Bulldogs (2-6).

"I think prior to going down here we were struggling to get opportunities in the offensive third," Gianfrancesco said. "That's what we did very well in the whole tournament, and dominated possession. ... Now the next piece is finishing those chances and being mentally tough to step up and finish those when the opportunity arises."

Gianfrancesco was speaking from a relatively empty team bus Saturday afternoon as many players scattered to take part in the remainder of the school's homecoming weekend.

"Everybody just jumped in cars with their families or whatever and blazed it back up here for the homecoming festivities," Gianfrancesco said.
