Kaneland Connection: FitMama opens chapter in Elburn

Erin Schaefer has moved her FitMama gym to Elburn.

Erin Schaefer’s journey started with an impressive weight loss of nearly 100 pounds, a feat that required hours of hard work and help from a fitness trainer. But she said she didn’t really find her true path to a career in fitness until she did something as simple as open a newspaper.

Perusing a list of the top-10 jobs of 2010 in January of that year, she spotted one she thought was perfect – personal trainer checked in at No. 3. Just like that, she had found her calling. And from a boot camp that year to a business in downtown LaFox that started in January, she has met her goals.

The only problem? She was outgrowing her space in LaFox.

On Saturday, she launched her latest chapter – a new FitMama facility at 707 Herra St., Elburn. She said she has more than tripled the space she had in LaFox – now with about 2,600 square feet – and can offer three classes at a time. Visitors were greeted by women dressed in bright pink shirts, and Schaefer was making the rounds, showing off her facility.

FitMama is a women-only facility that offers class sessions at set times during the week. Schaefer said she has a lot in common with those in her target audience – women in their 20s, 30s and 40s.

“I don’t have the aesthetics of a trainer with the muscles or one who is skinny,” she said. “But I do have the knowledge and the experience of someone who has lost weight and someone who has been there.”

Schaefer, an Elburn resident, offers classes in the mornings and evenings. Participants can become full members or sign up by the class. It is not a 24-hour facility, but Schaefer notes that because it is for women only, comfort is key.

“There are no mirrors here,” she said. “You can wear your junkiest clothes.”
