Rosary volleyball sweeps Marian Central
WOODSTOCK – The Rosary volleyball team translated its practice preparation into a win.
The past week’s focus was on blocking, and the Royals totaled nine blocks in their 25-21, 25-14 Suburban Christian Conference win Monday at Marian Central.
Rosary coach Rachel Hartmann said that blocking had been a point of struggle for the Royals (9-6, 2-2), but Monday’s effort on the front line helped the whole team.
“It just helps your defense set up,” Hartmann said. “If you can have a good block, our defense can set up earlier and know what’s coming at them instead of guessing what’s going to happen.”
Erin Bowe and Marissa Prochaska each had two blocks, with Bowe also leading the team with six kills. Katie Baki posted 14 digs and Joanna Wedge added 16 assists.
The Royals broke open each game with rallies, breaking off eight straight points after Game 1 was tied at 9, and had two separate seven-point rallies to take Game 2.
St. Francis 2, Aurora Central Catholic 0 (25-12, 25-13): At Aurora, McKenna Kelsay had 23 assists and nine digs, and Mary Boken had 10 service points for St. Francis (13-2, 4-0 Suburban Christian Conference Blue).
St. Charles East Invitational: St. Charles East (8-2) opened tournament play by trouncing Belvidere, 9-0, behind Andrew Shone’s second hat trick in less than a week.
South Elgin Invite: At Elgin Country Club, St. Charles North (168) won the nine-team event as North’s Jordyn McFarlane (38) and Jessica Grill (39) were the top two scorers.
Megan Kelly (39) was Geneva’s top scorer, helping the Vikings (193) take second as a team. Josie Kurosky (42) was the top scorer for Burlington Central (214).
Rosary 4, West Chicago 2: At West Chicago, Rosary won three of the four doubles matches, including a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 doubles by Marie Zolfo and Nelson Jenig, to win the rain-shortened meet.
