Wheaton Academy boys golf closer to goal

ST. CHARLES – The Wheaton Academy boys golf team had a hunch Tuesday’s Suburban Christian Conference dual against Marmion would be special when the schedule was released.

The Cadets were coming off a second-place finish at the IHSA Class 2A state meet. The Warriors aspired to such a level.

Wheaton Academy’s 160-167 victory at the St. Charles Country Club was one step toward that goal. The Warriors, 11-0 overall and 6-0 in league duals, stayed unbeaten while sweating an outcome that was in doubt until the final group turned in its scorecards.

“We’re going to be carrying some great momentum,” Wheaton Academy coach Scott Broman said. “We still have a lot to accomplish this season, but this is a great stepping stone for us.”

Wheaton Academy’s Zack Spear (38) edged Marmion’s Ricky Angsten by one stroke for medalist honors. Spear also had a hand in the change of venue. For one afternoon, anyway, the Warriors left their home course of Pheasant Run to cater to the magnitude of the match.

Spear’s parents are members at St. Charles Country Club, Broman said, and worked with club officials to move the dual across St. Charles.

Danny Gryfinski and Grant Gosden both had 40s for the Warriors. Marmion’s Joe Fritz added a 41.

Kaneland 151, Morris 169: At Hughes Creek in Elburn, co-medalists Matt Yonkovich and Luke Kreiter carded separate 37s for Kaneland in an NI Big 12 win. Connor Williams (38) and Dan Miller (39) were next for the Knights.
