Gresey: Talking peace, civil communication

Published: Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012 5:30 a.m. CDT

Several weeks ago, I received an email from Jean Pierce.

The email discussed how Jean was planning an interfaith International Day of Peace celebration from 1 to 5 p.m. today on the courthouse lawn along Third Street in Geneva.

Jean wrote that the event would address civil, honest communication in an election year, and she wanted to know whether I would like to join a panel discussion that will focus on the media’s role in election rhetoric. The information she included in her email noted the name of the panel presentation would be “How Can Voters Find The Truth In Media In An Election Year?”

I agreed to be on the panel and am looking forward to the discussion, which will include other journalists and is scheduled to take place from 2 to 2:50 p.m. today. If it rains, the event will be moved to the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, 102 S. Second St., Geneva.

Other presentations slated for the local International Day of Peace celebration include “How to Respond to Hate Language” by Thom Thomas, a communications consultant and practitioner of the Marshall Rosenberg approach to nonviolent communication (1 p.m.); “What Does Honest, Respectful Debate Look Like?” with Model UN students from Geneva High School (3 p.m.);” and “Experiences Participating in Nonviolent Communication in Selma, Alabama” with Linda and Loy Williams (4 p.m).

In addition, live folk music and children’s activities will be part of the celebration.

The free event is hosted by the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva and Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors.
