Letter: Assessments – do this now

To the Editor:

It was disturbing to read the letter to the editor (Kane County Chronicle, Sept. 6) from Dawn Vance regarding her perception of the process involved in correcting errors in property attributes or disagreements with assessed values. It is not always necessary to file a formal complaint.

In Geneva Township, we have over 11,500 parcels, each containing dozens of attribute data. Yes, occasionally errors are made. I encourage everyone to review their property’s data online at www.genevatownship.com. I lived in my house in Geneva for over 14 years before looking up my own property, only to find that data indicated I had a finished basement, which I do not. A quick call to the assessor’s office corrected the error. The process for correcting data remains that simple.
