Letter: Assessments – do this now

Published: Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012 5:30 a.m. CDT

To the Editor:

It was disturbing to read the letter to the editor (Kane County Chronicle, Sept. 6) from Dawn Vance regarding her perception of the process involved in correcting errors in property attributes or disagreements with assessed values. It is not always necessary to file a formal complaint.

In Geneva Township, we have over 11,500 parcels, each containing dozens of attribute data. Yes, occasionally errors are made. I encourage everyone to review their property’s data online at www.genevatownship.com. I lived in my house in Geneva for over 14 years before looking up my own property, only to find that data indicated I had a finished basement, which I do not. A quick call to the assessor’s office corrected the error. The process for correcting data remains that simple.

Having researched the property referenced in the Vance editorial, we found that the data indicated a garage had been built in 2006. That does not necessarily mean that her assessment from 2007 on included a value for that garage. As such, a phone call to this office at 630-232-3600 would have resolved this issue quite simply.

With regards to assessed values, the Kane County Board of Review recommends contacting your assessor before filing a complaint. This can eliminate the process of finding comps – or comparable properties – and filing a "5 copy complaint." Most differences can be resolved in a quick and friendly manner.

If a call to my office at 630-232-3600 does not resolve the issue and you do wish to file a complaint about your assessment, may I suggest that you go to our website, www.genevatownship.com, where you can easily view only sales that pertain to your neighborhood. There is no need to wade through sales in 15 townships on the county’s website.
