Prep Roundup: St. Charles East girls golf knocks off pair of Tri-Cities rivals

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East girls golf team rode a pair of above-and-beyond performances to beat St. Charles North and Batavia on Thursday in an Upstate Eight Conference triangular meet at Pottawatomie Golf Course.

East (172) squeaked by North (174); both St. Charles schools were well ahead of Batavia (224). Paige Jordan led the Saints with a 41, and East coach Rod Osborne said senior Jane Noelker (42) and freshman Karina Shah (45) both outdid their averages by three to four strokes.

Osborne said Noelker habitually excels late in the season.

“She’s had a habit of doing that the past couple of years, and she’s heading in that direction again, and hopefully she continues,” Osborne said. “And then for my freshman to go out there and shoot 45, that was her best of the year, and it was a good time to have that because it was such a close match.”

Darby Crane (44) was the other scorer for the Saints.

North senior Ariana Furrie (40) was medalist.

“At our last invite I was hitting my drives really well, and then the other day I was hitting them awful, and then today they were pretty good again, so I was happy about that,” Furrie said.

Jordyn McFarlane and Jessica Grill each carded 44s for North and Sam Scroggin added a 46 for the North Stars, who wore orange ribbons in their hair in tribute to Anna Daley, a former Saints golfer who died in May.

“It’s definitely something that we’ve both went through and felt so it’s connected us together, I think,” Furrie said.

East hung its senior day decorations over a recently installed bench at Pottawatomie in memory of Daley.

Sophomore Lauren Anderson (46) was the top scorer for Batavia.

Geneva 176, Plainfield North 207: At Whitetail Ridge in Yorkville, Megan Kelly (39), Katie Kelly (44), Nicole Hassels (46) and Mary Clare Novak (47) paced Geneva to the nonconference win.

St. Charles North 155, Batavia 163: At Bowes Creek in Elgin, North’s Raghav Cherala shot a 1-over 37 and was backed up by Jason McAleese (38), Dan Shepherd (39) and Ryan DalDegan (41).

Batavia’s scorers were Jon Hvasta (39), Nathan Podraza (40), Billy Zwick (41) and Taylor Brandt (43).

St. Charles East Invitational: T.C. Hull scored a pair of goals for St. Charles East (9-2-1), including one with about two minutes left to tie the match, as East rallied to tie Marmion, 3-all, and play its way into Saturday’s tournament final against Plainfield Central. Daniel DiLeonardi notched East’s other goal.

Yorkville 3, Kaneland 0: At Yorkville, Kaneland (7-2-2, 2-1-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) absorbed its first conference loss.

Richmond-Burton 1, Burlington Central 0: At Richmond, Central (9-2-2, 6-1-1 Big Northern East) had its 10-match unbeaten streak snapped.

Geneva 2, South Elgin 0 (25-23, 25-15): At Geneva, the host Vikings (10-7) won the UEC crossover match.

Rosary 2, Aurora Central Catholic 0 (25-10, 25-19): At Aurora, visiting Rosary (10-7, 3-2 Suburban Christian Conference Blue) won behind Marissa Prochaska (eight kills) and Briana Flagg and Erin Bowe (six kills each). Flagg also had three blocks.
