Mutual Ground to raise awareness in October

Published: Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012 5:30 a.m. CDT

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, so Mutual Ground, an organization which provides services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, will kick off a 30-day focus on Domestic Violence Awareness starting Monday.

The public is invited to wear purple ribbons as a symbol for domestic violence awareness and attend or participate in activities to raise awareness.

In an effort to commemorate the lives of those who have died as a result of domestic violence and to honor survivors, a candlelight vigil, Light the Night for Domestic Violence Awareness will be at 6:30 p.m Oct. 3 at the North Aurora Police Station, 200 S. Lincolnway, North Aurora.

The theme is to shine light on domestic violence because it thrives in darkness and silence, organizers say.

The fifth annual 5K Walk for Hope fundraiser will be Oct. 20 at Fabyan Forest Preserve, 1925 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva. Participants are raising money online or in person to help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The goal is to raise $75,000 to be used for providing self-sufficiency, empowering victims, providing safety, helping survivors, educating communities and encouraging awareness. Supporters can create a team and companies can provide sponsorship online at or at

Shirt pickup, money turn in, refreshments and children’s activities will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. The walk will begin at 9:45 a.m. Recognition of top fundraisers and refreshments will follow at 10:45 a.m.

All month, Chili’s restaurants at 491 N. Randall Road, Batavia, and at 1290 N. Orchard Road, Aurora, will donate 10 percent of those making purchases who provide vouchers to Mutual Ground. Vouchers can be found at
