Trader Joe’s recalls its brand of peanut butter

Trader Joe’s is voluntarily recalling its Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter because of potential contamination with salmonella, according to a news release issued Monday by the Kane County Health Department.

In advance of this recall, Trader Joe’s has removed the product from store shelves.

Trader Joe’s only store in central Kane County is in Batavia. No cases have been connected to the store.

Only one case with the outbreak strain has been identified in Illinois. The resident lives in McLean County, and onset occurred in August. At this point, it is not known whether the person consumed this product.

As of Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 29 cases of salmonella with a specific pattern from 18 states since June of this year. According to the CDC, a high percentage of cases report consuming Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter made with sea salt from Trader Joe’s stores before their illness.

The recalled product was distributed to Trader Joe’s stores nationwide. The product comes in a 16-ounce plastic jar with an expiration date stamped below the lid. Production and distribution of the item has been suspended while the FDA and the product supplier continue their investigations.

Customers who have purchased this item are urged not to eat the product and to dispose of it or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund. Customers with questions may contact Trader Joe’s customer relations at 626-599-3817.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (such as infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
