Sugar Grove woman charged with theft from credit union

A Sugar Grove woman has been charged with stealing more than $30,000 from the Aurora Firefighters Credit Union.

Anne Schaal, 66, of the 0-100 block of Birchwood Court, Sugar Grove, has been charged with theft and unlawful use of a credit card, both felonies. She was the president of the union from July 1996 until November 2011.

Schaal posted $5,000 bail earlier this month. A court hearing is set for Oct. 5.

She also is being sued by the credit union. In that lawsuit, filed earlier this year, the credit union charged that Schaal “intentionally used credit union funds and processes for improper purposes, including for her personal benefit.”

The suit alleged that Schaal posted payments on her Aurora Firefighters Credit Union credit card to the cardnet service provider that she did not actually make “to hide her misappropriation of credit union funds in the amount of approximately $12,000.”

It also makes other charges, including that Schaal misappropriated teller cash in the amount of about $10,222.94, and that she used her AFFCU credit card for personal expenses and has not repaid about $1,133.

In addition, the suit charged she failed to make required tax filings on behalf of the credit union, which had led to $13,417 in interest and penalties imposed by the Internal Revenue Service. It also charged that Schaal posted the wrong, higher interest rate to members’ credit card accounts, resulting in the credit union having to refund $1,568 to those members.

The suit asks the court to rule against Schaal in the amount of $9,907.94, plus attorney’s fees and other costs. Schaal’s attorney has denied the allegations in the lawsuit.
