Defense leads St. Charles North football to 3rd straight win

STREAMWOOD – Although it took a little while for St. Charles North to get its offense started, the North Stars did just enough to get their third-straight victory Friday night.

North relied on its defense and received a solid effort from senior defensive back Nick McCullough as it defeated the Sabres, 31-14, in an Upstate Eight Conference River Divsion battle.

“Streamwood’s a tough team, so it was good for our guys to overcome the first half,” North coach Mark Gould said. “They came after us with their best shot, but our kids came out in the second half and gave them their best shot. They responded well.”

North (3-3, 3-1) took the initial lead when an interception by senior Conor Lee set up a quick 21-yard drive that ended in George Edlund’s 11-yard run with 6:13 left in the first quarter. Streamwood responded with 14 unanswered points to take a 14-7 advantage with 3:04 left in the half.

Quarterback Ryan Fischbach orchestrated a six-play drive to keep the North Stars on par when he found Garrett Johnson for a 7-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 14 two minutes later.

Streamwood tried to respond with a scoring drive of its own on the ensuing possession, and the Sabres nearly did so by taking the ball all the way to the North Star 26-yard line. Junior Jonathan Elliot intercepted the final desperation pass at the 10-yard line.

“We made some great plays,” Gould said. “We came up big when we needed to.”

McCullough’s second half carried North as he returned a punt back 72 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, then intercepted a pass at the Sabre 20-yard line. The pick set up a 23-yard field goal from Kat Stutesman to give the North Stars a 24-14 cushion.

“Coach told us at halftime that we needed to come out with some fire and we did,” McCullough said. “Right when I got the ball (on the punt return) I knew had to do something, and luckily I got some good blocks to get the TD.”

The North Stars scored their final points in the fourth quarter when a 77-yard drive ended in Edlund’s second touchdown of the night, a 3-yard run with 6:53 left.

“We’ve got some big challenges coming up the rest of the season now starting with Batavia next week,” Gould said. “We just need to meet the challenge.”
