Football in St. Charles has taken some lumps the past couple years, what with the North Stars and Saints going into simultaneous playoff hibernation.
But here we are, two-thirds of the way through the 2012 season, and both teams are in the thick of the playoff hunt.
At 4-2, East is in super shape to make the playoffs, and the Saints can first lock in on the UEC River race, with a massive Week 8 game against Batavia looming. Nice win for the Saints on Friday against Geneva, especially considering how the game started. Looking for an unheralded player that's been big-time this season? Sly would submit speed demon Mitch Munroe, who's played a huge role in two of East's Ws.
North has won three straight after losing three in a row to start the year. The Stars can't do too much basking, though, with a mighty difficult assignment next week in B-Town.
A few other Week 6 thoughts:
• Geneva eliminated from the playoffs before we hit October? Wow. Trite as it sounds, the Vikings are better than a 1-5 team, but when you start a season 0-3, there ain't much margin for error, and Geneva made too many mistakes to beat East. The real head-scratcher is the clunker last week at North. Look for the Vikings to rattle off some Ws down the stretch and wonder what mighta been.
• 66 points for Kaneland vs. DeKalb. Knights getting better by the week, and plenty ready to play some big games in October.
• Give it up for the ACC Chargers, now 5-1 and about to break a postseason drought that goes back to the 90s.
• Looks like St. Charles North and St. Francis are going to be the bubble teams around here when it comes to the playoffs. Both teams are 3-3 The writing is already on the wall for everyone else, for better or for worse.
