Australian man charged with sex assault in St. Charles
ST. CHARLES – A 24-year-old Australian man faces multiple felony charges after St. Charles police said he assaulted a woman at a St. Charles conference center.
Jefry Sutjito, of the 200 block of King Street, Melbourne, was required to surrender his passport and is being held at the Kane County jail on $500,000 bail, police said.
Police reportedly responded to the Q Center, 1405 N. Fifth Ave., at 10:15 a.m. Monday for a reported sexual assault in a dorm room. Officers interviewed the 22-year-old female victim, witnesses and the suspect upon arrival.
Sutjito and the woman were participating in a four-week training class, police said.
Police took Sutjito into custody at about 3:30 p.m., and a 72-hour investigative hold was placed on him, police said.
He was charged Wednesday with two counts of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony; one count of attempted criminal sexual assault, a Class 2 felony; and one count of criminal sexual abuse, a Class 4 felony.
Although Sutjito lives in Australia, police said, he is a citizen of Indonesia. Police said the Indonesian consulate has been notified about his arrest.
He is expected in court on Oct. 11.
