Gresey: Chronicle welcomes The Republicans

The news was hard to miss.

Earlier this week, Shaw Media – owner of the Kane County Chronicle – announced the acquisition of Suburban Life publications, formerly part of GateHouse Media.

Now, Shaw Media owns 22 more weekly newspapers, including the St. Charles Republican, the Geneva Republican and the Batavia Republican.

This week, I’ve been getting to know my new coworkers. It’s been an exciting time, meeting new people, talking over strategy and putting plans in place to run three successful weekly newspapers – The Republicans – and a daily newspaper – the Kane County Chronicle – in Kane County.

Some of my past professional experiences have helped prepare me for this transition.

In December 2005, I was a weekly reporter at the old Lakeland Media company based in Grayslake when it was acquired by Shaw. I can still remember the day the Shaw executives came up to make the announcement. I was surprised, enthused and – admittedly – a bit apprehensive. It was definitely a big change, but with big change comes great opportunity.

In 2008, I became the managing editor of the Lake County weekly operation that Shaw owns. I managed the Lake County Journal for three years and really learned a lot about what it takes to run an informative and engaging weekly newspaper.

The skills I honed at the Journal and my past experience with acquisition should serve me well as my team looks to put together a dynamite package of daily and weekly newspapers in Kane County.
