AURORA – The St. Charles East girls volleyball team rallied for a trio of three-game victories Saturday en route to a Silver Bracket championship at its own Mizuno Cup.

Behind solid tournaments from outside hitter Nicole Woods and setter Erienne Barry, the Saints defeated Hinsdale Central, Geneva and Prairie Ridge in pool play to finish ninth out of 24 teams at Great Lakes Center.

"Everybody just stepped up at different times," East coach Jennie Kull said. "We haven't played a lot of three-set matches, so it's good experience. The more games, the more we'll have under our belts for playoff time. I'm glad that we were able to be successful in those three-gamers."

Geneva, which fell, 15-25, 25-21, 19-25 in the Geneva match, finished 12th. Hannah Buck collected 51 kills and 52 digs in five tournament matches – bracket play began Friday – while Kelly Dalheim contributed 59 digs.

Rosary also was part of the Silver Bracket and finished 13th after topping Barrington, 32-30, 25-16, in the bracket's fifth-place match.

Benet defeated Lincoln-Way Central, 25-5, 25-19, for the Gold and overall title.

Bettendorf Tournament: At Bettendorf, Iowa, Kaneland went 1-2 against competition from the Hawkeye State, defeating Waukee, 15-21, 21-17, 19-17 after losing to Ankeny and Bettendorf earlier in the day.

Ashley Prost collected 36 assists for the 15-9 Knights. Ellie Dunn had 16 kills, 10 digs and four blocks, while Shayna Tucek added 21 digs.

BOYS SOCCER

Marmion 2, St. Francis 0: At Wheaton, Gavin Sanchez banged in a rebound of a Conor Morton shot midway through the first half, providing all the offense Marmion would need as it remained unbeaten in the Suburban Christian Conference.

Morton added a second-half goal as the Cadets (13-5-2, 6-0 SCC) set up a match for the conference crown against fellow league unbeaten Wheaton Academy Wednesday at Marmion.

"We came in very focused. The boys were very disciplined in their defense," Cadets coach Ricky Del Toro said. "We knew that in order to get a shot for the title against Wheaton Academy, we had to be all those things. We did that. We did that very well."

Marmion goalkeeper Brian Hymel notched the shutout. St. Francis fell to 10-8 (6-2 SCC).

Streamwood 4, Geneva 0: At Streamwood, Geneva (5-7-2, 3-3 Upstate Eight Conference River Division) trailed, 3-0, at intermission.

Kaneland 3, Plainfield East 2: At Maple Park, Arsim Azemi tallied a goal and an assist in the first half for Kaneland (11-3-2). The Knights Alec Koczka and Anthony Parillo also scored.

Burlington Central 2, Harvard 1: At Harvard, Ian Graffagna scored with 58 seconds remaining to boost BC. Matt O'Connor assisted on both goals for the Rockets (15-3-2, 9-1-1 Big Northern Conference East), who also got a tally from Bryce Warner.

FOOTBALL

Wheaton Academy 12, St. Edward 7: At West Chicago, John Gemmel helped Wheaton Academy to its third straight win, scoring on a kickoff return and a 30-yard run in the SCC crossover. Also a linebacker, Gemmel was part of a solid defensive effort by the Warriors (3-4) against the Green Wave's running attack.

"Our guys came and bottled them up pretty good," Warriors coach T.J. Ragan said. "They swarmed some very good running backs and had a lot of guys on the ball every time."

GIRLS TENNIS

St. Francis wins SCC meet: At Wheaton, St. Francis won titles at No. 2 doubles (Genna Gruendeman and Kailey O'Connor) and No. 3 doubles (Rachel Krisco and Katie Schiewe) en route to the overall SCC crown.

The Spartans had 20 team points. Wheaton Academy and Chicago Christian tied for second with 14, while Rosary (fifth, 7) and Aurora Central Catholic (sixth, 3) also were part of the 10-team event.

Wheaton Academy's Lexi Welton and Betsy Jones teamed for a title at No. 1 doubles. Paige Robinson and Maddie Deufel of Rosary opposed St. Francis in the final at No. 2 doubles.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Sterling Invitational: At Sterling, Kaneland finished 15th among 23 teams behind a 35th-place run from Maggie Brundige. Standout sophomore Victoria Clinton competed in the freshman/sophomore race and won.

GIRLS SWIMMING

East second at college events meet: At St. Charles, host St. Charles East (324) finished second to champion New Trier (439) in the seven-team event.

The Saints' event winners included: Mary Snyder (100- and 200-yard freestyle), Shea Hoyt (100 breaststroke) and Nicole Chapko (400 individual medley).
