Vacancy in the UEC

Hey Kaneland, miss playing with the big schools yet?

Don't think that's the case, but there is an opening in the Upstate Eight Conference now that Lake Park is going bye bye for the DVC, and Sly's guessing there is more than one or two of Kaneland's Northern Illinois Big 12 brethren that wouldn't mind the Knights taking a hike, with the way Kaneland has dominated the young conference in certain sports. Football rings a bell. The next time Kaneland loses a NI Big 12 football game will be the first.

Kaneland wouldn't be a fit for the Upstate Eight's big-school Valley Division but who knows if the conference will be able to reel in a big fish slot in for Lake Park. West Aurora comes to mind as a school that would make some sense but the Blackhawks seem entrenched in the DVC.

If the UEC can't find a big enough school to slide into the Valley, it could get real interesting on the realignment front. It'd be a tricky proposition, because the Tri-Cities schools all want to stick together and the same goes for the Valleys, Metea, Waubonsie and Neuqua. Elgin, Larkin and Streamwood aren't strong enough to make the move up. That doesn't make for a ton of flexibility.

It was only three years ago that the new UEC took hold, and here we are with changes already afoot.

Sure would be fun to have Kaneland back in the mix with Batavia and Geneva, but Sly knows that's probably a pipe dream. Even though the Knights are plenty good enough to compete in most varsity sports, having the levels to stack up with the UEC schools would probably be a deal-breaker, even if Kaneland had any interest in undoing the recent break-up.

Oh well. Here's hoping West High gets the urge to come aboard. Should be an interesting deal to watch, with less than a month til the deadline for schools to express interest to the UEC.
