ELBURN – A vacant downtown storefront will not stay empty for long.
Next month, the American Family Insurance agency operated by agent Justin Smitherman will set up shop in the office space in the 100 block of North Main Street recently vacated by the Elburn Herald.
The newspaper had operated from the downtown offices for about 50 years. But this month, the Elburn Herald announced it was leaving that space for other office units within the Elburn and Countryside Community Center.
When the space opened, it was quickly claimed by Smitherman’s insurance agency.
Smitherman said his business has grown rapidly since he opened more than two years ago, necessitating the move from the offices he now occupies in the Elburn Community Center to larger, more prominent space elsewhere.
“We’ve done exceptionally well,” said Smitherman, noting he was named the American Family Insurance agent of the year in Illinois this year.
He said the increase in business also has prompted him to add staff. He employs two other workers in his office and soon will add a third, he said.
Smitherman said he learned of the pending vacancy in the Elburn Herald space months ago and contacted the owner of the building promptly to secure the space.
“It’s a great space, and we’re really glad to get it,” Smitherman said.
He intends to open for business in the 100 block of North Main Street in mid- to late November.
