Batavia may cut
aldermen’s pay

BATAVIA – The Batavia City Council on Monday will vote on a proposal to cut aldermen’s pay by 10 percent and freeze the mayor’s salary.

The Government Services Committee on Monday recommended the pay cut. Fourth Ward Alderman Jim Volk suggested the pay cut. Aldermen currently are paid $200 for each City Council meeting they attend, or $4,800 a year.

“The economy is still hurting and taxpayers are groaning,” Volk said. “It’s more symbolic. We need to keep tightening the belt.”
