Face Time with Charlene Boehm

Oswego resident Charlene Boehm, 60, was signing up volunteers for the CROP Walk fundraiser at Bethany Lutheran Church in Batavia when she answered 12 questions for the Kane County Chronicle’s Brenda Schory.

Where did you grow up? In the Fox Valley area because I lived in Carpentersville, Algonquin, Elgin and now Oswego.

Pets? One dog, a mixed-breed rescue named Mocha

Who would play you in the movie of your life? Cameron Diaz

First job? I worked at W.T. Grant, a dime store.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a teacher, and eventually I became that, but I did software development for most of my working life. I went into teaching when I retired from that.

A movie you’d recommend? “Top Gun”

What is your guilty pleasure? Chocolate.

Favorite charity? I do support CROP Walk, a churchwide fundraising activity sponsored by Church World Service, so it’s across the country. Churches get together and do a 3K or 5K and fundraise to help end hunger. Twenty-five percent of the money goes locally, and the rest internationally. They don’t just provide food, they help build wells, help with education to learn to do things to better themselves so they can provide for themselves.

Do you have to walk? No, you can participate online at www.cropwalkonline.org or www.churchworldservice.org and sign up to walk or make a donation.

Hobbies? Church and my family

Favorite local restaurant? El Taco Grande in Batavia

What is an interesting factoid about yourself? A lot of the projects I worked on at Lucent Technologies involved the Japanese, and I loved working with them. I loved learning about their culture and the way they interact with each other – it’s so much different than us. They expect perfection at all times. If you make any mistakes, you have to justify yourself in writing.
