Prep roundup: Kaneland boys soccer team beats Sycamore in regular-season finale

SYCAMORE – The Kaneland boys soccer team had trouble breaking through during Thursday’s match against Sycamore despite controlling the game’s flow.

Midway through the second half, Arsim Azemi relieved the tension for the Knights, scoring from about 20 yards out off a Kushstrim Ismaili assist for a 1-0 Kaneland win in the Knights’ regular season finale.

“It’s always a relief,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said about Azemi breaking the scoreless tie. “You’re like ‘C’mon guys, we’ve got to finish, we’ve got to put a ball in back of the net here.’ [Sycamore] didn’t threaten too much but you don’t want to tie a game when you’re playing that well. Well, I shouldn’t say we played well, but we played good enough to win.”

The Knights (13-3-2, 7-2-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) finish second to DeKalb in the conference.

The Knights open the postseason on Wednesday in an IHSA Class 2A Burlington Central Regional semifinal, where Sycamore could provide the opposition if the Spartans defeat IMSA in Saturday’s play-in game.

Glenbard South 3, St. Francis 0: At Glen Ellyn, St. Francis dropped its regular season finale in what coach Kristin Keigley called “a pretty bad game for us.” The nonconference loss dropped the Spartans to 11-10.

Sycamore 2, Kaneland 1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-18): At Sycamore, Kaneland’s Emily Laudant had eight kills and Lyndi Scholl and Ellie Dunn had seven kills each for Kaneland (16-10, 4-4 NI Big 12 East) in the conference loss. Shayna Tucek notched 30 digs for the Knights.

Waubonsie Valley 2, Batavia 0 (25-20, 25-22): At Aurora, Batavia’s Kristen Koncelik had five kills, three blocks and two aces and Heather Meyer led the Bulldogs with seven kills to go with two blocks. Briahna Havis added eight digs for the Bulldogs (14-14) in the UEC crossover.

Richmond-Burton 2, Burlington Central 0 (25-19, 25-18): At Burlington, Jess Emrich had 18 assists and Lexie Bouza had nine kills and seven digs for Central (20-8, 8-2 Big Northern Conference East) in the conference loss.
