AURORA – The Marmion student section came prepared for the Cadets’ matchup with rival Aurora Central Catholic on Friday.
With bullhorns and noise-makers at the ready, the throng of students were able to break into an “overrated” cheer earlier than anyone may have expected.
The Cadets scored on all five of their first-half drives en route to an easy 41-7 win over the playoff-bound Chargers.
“We came out with pride against St. Francis [last week] and we did it again tonight,” Marmion coach Dan Thorpe said. “Offensively, we thought we should have scored more against St. Francis, and I thought we were more efficient tonight. As I said from day one, I really like this team. I’ve said all along that we are a nice team.”
Marmion looked like the playoff-bound team Friday, running for 117 yards in the first half, scoring on each of its five possessions and getting quality play from quarterbacks’ Charlie Faunce and Brock Krueger.
Krueger was efficient in the first half, completing 4 of 6 passes for 95 yards, which included a 40-yard touchdown toss to Seth Sevenich.
The Cadets (3-5, 3-3 Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division) also featured running back Jake Ruddy – who missed several games with a concussion – throughout the first half. The senior didn’t disappoint, scoring on a pair of first quarter runs.
“We haven’t played them since my freshman year when they beat us,” Ruddy said. “We had that urge in our stomachs to come back and beat them this week. Like coach said, that’s a good team – it’s the best ACC team we’ve seen. I missed our homecoming game and it was hard to watch but it’s nice to be back with us playing well.”
Meanwhile, the Chargers (6-2, 4-2 SCC Gold) veer option was stopped in the first half as the Cadets stacked the box with eight and nine players. ACC only ran six plays in the first quarter on its way to just 35 yards rushing in the first half.
“I don’t think we played well, especially early on,” Aurora Central Catholic coach Brian Casey said. “Film is very deceptive. On film, you couldn’t gauge how quick they were up front. I think especially early on, they were able to use that to their advantage to get in the back field. Our offense isn’t designed to allow penetration and we allowed some of that early on and it got us down.”
All seemed to be going the Cadets’ way in the first half as Faunce led a running-style offense while Krueger ran more passing plays from the shotgun. The two signal-callers’ flip-flopped possessions in the first 24 minutes, each leading Marmion down the field rather easily.
“Throughout the season we weren’t doing it [playing two quarterbacks] that much but tonight we were using them every other possession,” Ruddy said. “Tonight, Brock’s group, which is more passing and Charlie’s group, which is more running helped us out a lot tonight. I feel like they [ACC] was a bit confused on defense.”
The Cadets forced the running clock early in the third quarter as Krueger found Sevenich for a 4-yard touchdown to push Marmion’s lead to 41-0. Krueger finished the night 6 for 9 with a pair of touchdown tosses and 117 yards passing.
A late score Drake Riedy seven-yard touchdown run was the lone bright spot on an otherwise forgetful night for ACC. The Chargers hope to improve their playoff seeding in the regular-season finale against Montini.
“We’re going to play to win next week but you have to be smart about it,” Casey said about next weeks’ game against Montini. “There’s a lot of positives that can come out of one more week. You have a chance to take a look at a few things and individuals. I like the schedule and does a good job of showing you what you need to work on.”
