Prep roundup: St. Charles East volleyball wins UEC crossover match

AURORA – The St. Charles East girls volleyball team defeated Waubonsie Valley for the second time in three days Monday, winning an Upstate Eight Conference crossover match, 25-16, 25-16.

The Saints (22-11) needed three games to beat the Warriors at Glenbard East’s Autumnfest tournament Saturday but were sharper this time.

Senior Nicole Woods had 10 kills and nine digs, Erienne Barry added 19 assists, Anne Hughes notched 10 digs and Ashley Bullock led East with four blocks.

“She did a great job today,” East coach Jennie Kull said of Bullock. “I think that was one of the things we talked about this weekend is just working on [blocking]. She did a nice job reading the middle. I was really pleased. That is definitely a great stat for her.”

The win was a tune-up for East’s rumble tonight at Geneva. The winner will claim the UEC River championship.

“They’re a quality team and it’s going to be at their house,” Kull said. “We just need to play well. We’re rolling into next week, getting ready for the playoffs. At this point, we need to focus on what we’re doing and can’t worry too much about it being Geneva or a big match. We just need to keep plugging away and playing as best as we possibly can to be ready for the playoffs.”

Rosary 2, Marian Central 0 (25-18, 25-22): At Aurora, Erin Bowe contributed seven kills and six digs to boost Rosary (22-11, 6-3 Suburban Christian Conference Blue). Briana Flagg added six kills for the Royals, while Jo Gallagher dished 15 assists.

St. Francis 2, Aurora Central Catholic 0 (25-12, 25-15): At Wheaton, McKenna Kelsay had 17 assists, Michelle Mclaughlan notched six kills, Lexie Riccolo had 13 service points and Sam Dubiel added nine digs as St. Francis (29-5) prevailed in SCC Blue play.

Wheaton Academy 2, St. Edward 0 (25-20, 28-26): At West Chicago, Bianca Cifaldi had 17 kills – including two to finish the match – and 11 digs to power the Warriors (26-7, 9-2 SCC Gold) to the senior night win. Brianna Tellschow added 12 service points and five kills for the Warriors.
