Prep roundup: Batavia tennis duo eliminated

PALATINE – The Batavia girls tennis doubles team of Jenny Mizikar and Amelia Cogan was eliminated from the IHSA state tournament Friday in a fifth-round consolation match.

The Bulldogs duo fell to Jillian Wallace and Evelyn Youel of Crystal Lake Central, 6-2, 6-2. Cogan, a sophomore, and Mizikar, a junior, became the school’s first doubles pair to surpass 30 victories in consecutive seasons this fall.

Doubles teams from Rosary (Andrea Goyao /Megan Conlin) and Wheaton Academy (Lexi Welton/Betsy Jones) also were eliminated in consolation play Friday.

Several backdraw matches – including those involving other athletes from the Kane County Chronicle coverage area – were held or postponed due to inclement weather. Backdraw play is set to resume at 8 a.m. today, with singles matches at Rolling Meadows and doubles play at Palatine.

North Boone 36, Burlington Central 6: At Burlington, BC (5-4, 4-2 Big Northern East) lost its third straight and remained on the postseason bubble. Rockets coach Rich Crabel said the team is antsy as it prepares for the IHSA’s postseason pairings show at 8 tonight.

Montini 38, Aurora Central Catholic 7: At Lombard, ACC absorbed its second straight lopsided loss to an SCC Blue foe in this Suburban Christian crossover. The Chargers (6-3, 4-3 SCC Gold) clinched the program’s first playoff berth since 1997 earlier this month.

Marian Central 41, Wheaton Academy 7: At Woodstock, Wheaton Academy managed to do something no other team had done against SCC Blue champion and unbeaten Marian Central.

Warriors safety Matthew Lindsay got Hurricanes quarterback Chris Streveler’s first interception of the season in the fourth quarter, showing the fight that Wheaton Academy (4-5, 4-2 SCC Gold) brought to the game.

“We came for a battle,” Warriors coach T.J. Ragan said. “We got outmatched, but our guys played hard.”

Wheaton Academy (4-5, 4-3 SCC Gold) saw its four-game winning streak and bid for playoff eligibility end.
