Saturday's Prep Roundup: Kaneland girls cross country breaks regional drought
ELBURN – The Kaneland girls cross country team won its first team regional title since 1992 on Saturday, securing the crown at the Class 2A Kaneland Regional at Elburn Woods Forest Preserve.
Paced by individual champion Victoria Clinton – a sophomore who won in 18:05 – the Knights scored 43 points, edging Crystal Lake Central by one.
"Excellent race by the entire top seven," Knights coach Doug Ecker wrote. "Overall team victory."
Brianna Bower (sixth) and Sydney Strang (ninth) also earned top 10 finishes for Kaneland, which advances to next week's Belvidere Sectional. Burlington Central also is Belvidere-bound after securing the sixth of seven team-qualifying spots.
Kayla Wolf (20:17) registered the top time for the Rockets.
Class 3A West Chicago Regional: At Reed-Keppler Park in West Chicago, Batavia placed fifth to advance to next week's St. Charles East Sectional. Lexi Slome (eighth, 18:10) and Alicia Grant (28th, 19:08) boosted the Bulldogs.
Class 2A Wheaton Academy Regional: At Reed-Keppler Park in West Chicago, Kate Roback's fourth-place overall finish in 18:32 helped St. Francis place fourth as a team and advance to next week's Wheaton Academy Sectional, also at Reed-Keppler.
Behind Kara Kalisz (19:23) and Liza Karina (19:08), respectively, Rosary and Aurora Central Catholic earned the final two team qualifying spots.
Wheaton Academy's Jackie Smith, Danielle Kauffman and Annika Pearson advanced as individuals.
Class 1A Aurora Christian Regional: At Oakhurst Forest Preserve in Aurora, Rebecca Wert's second-place run in 18:26 helped host Aurora Christian place third as a team and advance to next week's Lisle Sectional.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Class 3A West Chicago Regional: At Reed-Keppler Park in West Chicago, Batavia earned a fourth-place finish and advanced to next week's St. Charles East Sectional behind Trevor Hollis (13th, 15:49) and Mitch Zabka (16th, 15:50).
Marmion qualified four individual entries: Kevin Grahovec, Eric Anderson, Eric Lifka and Liam O'Dea.
Class 2A Kaneland Regional: At Elburn Woods Forest Preserve, host Kaneland finished second in the team race, and along with fifth-place Burlington Central advanced to next week's Belvidere Sectional.
Conor Johnson (sixth, 16:36) and Kyle Carter (seventh, 16:37) led the Knights. For Central, Clay Musial was 11th in 16:53.
Class 2A Wheaton Academy Regional: At Reed-Keppler Park in West Chicago, St. Francis (fourth), Wheaton Academy (fifth) and Aurora Central Catholic (sixth) each advanced to next week's Wheaton Academy Sectional.
ACC's Matt Meyers took fourth in 15:50, leading the pack of area runners. Nick Vilimek (16:26) was St. Francis' top finisher, while Noak Van Dyke (16:38) paced Wheaton Academy.
Class 1A: At Oakhurst Forest Preserve in Aurora, Jake Gehman (fourth, 15:50) paced Aurora Christian to a sixth-place team finish and a berth in next week's Lisle Sectional.
Spikefest Tournament: At Maple Park, Geneva defeated Yorkville, Metea Valley, Kaneland, Hampshire and Riverside-Brookfield to place first. The Vikings defeated second-place Kaneland, 25-19, 25-22, in the teams' head-to-head meeting.
Emily Laudont (19 kills), Jenny Lubic (47 assists) and Shayna Tucek (58 digs) paced the 21-12 Knights.
Geneva improved to 26-9.
